Beyond the luxurious interior appointments, Toyota designed both the Alphard and the Vellfire to provide a comfortable and smooth ride for second and third-row passengers. The Japanese automaker claims it was able to reduce vibrations experienced in the back by around 30 percent compared to previous model years.
Toyota has added rubber bushings to the rear seats, and lined them with memory foam to absorb vibrations from the road. The Japanese automaker also equipped both minivans with low-noise tires and additional sound-deadening to make a quieter cabin.

The 2024 Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are 7-seater premium Japanese minivans. It is the flagship people mover in Toyota’s global vehicle offerings.
Popular for being practical in Japan, the Vellfire and Alphard are designed to be easy to navigate through narrow urban streets in Japan. This results in the short length and compact width of the car, while also raising the height of the vehicle. For context, the Sienna is 6 inches wider, 7 inches longer, but still 6 inches shorter in height.
Toyota sells around 100,000 examples of these minivans every year in Japan alone. It is the luxury vehicle of choice for those who can’t get their hands on the flagship Toyota Century, which is now also an SUV.
In Japan, Toyota sells the Alphard starting at around $36,000 for the lowest-trim level, scaling to $58,000 for the highest-trim level. The Vellfire is the premium choice, starting around $43,000, while the top-of-the-line model will set you back around $60,000 (all prices are converted from Japanese Yen to USD). The base trim model of the Toyota Sienna starts from $37,000 in America, meaning they are both quite comparable.
Japan is Toyota’s largest minivan market, but they are equally popular in Thailand, China, Indonesia, Taiwan and other south-east Asian countries. The Alphard is the standard model, while the Vellfire is the premium offering. At launch, Toyota estimated 70 percent of sales to come from the Alphard, while 30 percent would be the Vellfire.

At first glance, the two minivans look exactly the same – they’re basically twins. Save for a few external design choices and exclusive options, the Toyota Alphard and the Toyota Vellfire are the same vehicles.
So what makes a buyer choose the Alphard or Vellfire over the other? In previous model years, not much as both were pretty much the same luxury minivans. But for the 2024 model year, Toyota has worked to differentiate each other between two distinct owner preferences.
The exterior design of the Vellfire reflects its active personality, from the sporty front grille to the aggressive rear light design. Toyota increased the Vellfire’s body rigidity by equipping the minivan with a front performance brace. Buyers also have the option to equip it with a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC turbo engine – exclusive to the Vellfire. While it’s probably not as fast as the Voyah Dreamer, which is one of the fastest minivans in the world today, Toyota said that it tuned the engine to give drivers a sense of acceleration even with minimal pedal input. The Japanese automaker also tuned the engine to deliver a sporty sound.
Furthermore, the Vellfire has an exclusive Z Premier grade option that perfectly pairs the vehicle’s sporty appearance with a jet black coat of paint with chrome highlights.
