Transformer trailer PikNik PTOL–200, with front and side panels is designed to form a country house with area of 18 m2, which is easily transformable to large terrace.
Additional canopy to protect from the sun and side screen to protect from winds make such structure invulnerable to any weather. Light colors and multiple venting systems allow for lower temperature even in hot climates. Transformer trailer PikNik PTOL – 200 has a full-fledged kitchen that can be used without deployment of the entire house.
Transformer trailer installation time does not exceed 15 minutes.
Transformer trailers are functional and do not require great amount of effort to be transported and transformed:
No response to wind, no increase in fuel consumption (verified by testing), rear view is always available, easy manoevrability, low center of gravity and radial tires give good adherence to road, design solution of trailer-to-truck junction minimize vibration severity – 13 inch or 14 inch wheels provide the required clearance minimum for off-road conditions.
General guidelines on using the light transformer trailers PikNik PTOL -200.
The trailers are designed for carrying of various cargoes when combined with light vehicles. The trailer was developed as per OST 37.001.220-93. They are permitted to be in operation with all kinds of light motor vehicles equipped with tow hitch as per OST 37.001.096 – 94 and a plug socket designed to plug in the electrical appliances of the trailer. The trailers use a series of assemblies and components (wheels, bearings, hubs, shock–absorbers, rubber bushing, shackles, electric, electrical torches, light reflectors), inherited from UAZ, Moskvich Gazel, etc. The trailers may be equipped with braking system.
While operating the trailer it is prohibited to:
— convey people on the load carrying platform of the trailer;
— operate the trailer while cargo is not fastened adequately;
— operate the trailer while safety chains are not fastened on the vehicle tow hitch, tow hitch being faulty, wear of the coupling head is inadmissible, components are inoperable;
— park the trailer train or individual trailer on the slope without anti-skid inserts and without the hand brake on;
— apply loads exceeding the motor license specifications.
Trailer operation guidelines
During the driving trial (up to 1000 km) it is required to monitor the condition of all the connections and tighten the loose threads.
Operating the trailer as a part of trailer train requires higher attention and caution, since the trailer is limiting the vehicle’s manoeuvrability, increases overtaking and braking times.
Cargo on the trailer shall be spread as proportionally as possible so that to provide adequate stress to the tow hitch as provided in the specifications. The stress shall be neither zero nor negative (i.e. when the trailer is towing the vehicle upside by the hitch ball), since this will lead to loss of the automobile stearability. Stress to the trailer hitch that exceeds the hitch specifications will lead to overloading of the hitch pole, the tow hitch and the undercarriages. To prevent cargo’s shifting or moving while running the vehicle, the cargo should be fastened. Carrying long cargoes with open front and tailgate shall be done with the cargo fixed against the sides to prevent breakages and deformations.
While loading the trailer, not only carrying capacity according to the motor license should be considered, but also the value of the total trailer weight acceptable for towing, that is set by the manufacturer of this specific towing vehicle. The value is set based on the conditions of road safety and the vehicle structure rigidity.
The allowable cargo weight should be determined by substraction of unladen trailer weight from the total trailer weight or from the manufacture-set total towing weight of the trailer under condition that this value does not exceed the total weight of the trailer.
When starting to drive each time, the driver shall ensure the following:
— good condition of tow hitch (Fig.3) and the coupler;
— accuracy of the electric components of the trailer;
— tire pressure within the norms;
— safety chains’ functioning and being secured against the tow hitch;
— good condition of locks, locking the sides and adequacy of cargo’s fixation.
The trailer is connected to the vehicle as follows:
— drive back the vehicle to the trailer or get the trailer close to the vehicle;
— connect the trailer to the vehicle tow hitch;
— connect the electric components of the trailer (Fig. 2) to the electric components of the vehicle, plugging the plug of the pole into the socket of the vehicle tow hitch and fix it with the socket cap;
— bolt the safety chains to the tow hitch of the vehicle, using bolt and nut;
— check the function of the electrical components.
Maintenance includes washing, painting, lubrication, electrotechnical and adjustment operations that are usually performed without disassembly of the trailer components. To provide durable service life it is required to conduct the following activities every 1000 km but no rarer than once per two years:
— washing the trailer for removal of all kinds of dirt and close inspection for cracks in metal and loose paint as a result of usage.
— observe and check all the threads and perform tightening as required;
— check tire pressure;
— observe and check the springs and check shock absorbers function. Shock absorbers functioning correctly allow no more than two oscillations of the loaded trailer;
— lubricate the components of the hitch using LITOL – 24 lubrication.
Replacement of the trailer wheels is usually carried out in connected to vehicle condition with parking brake on. The wheel is replaced as follows:
— place anti-skid inserts under the supporting wheel;
— loosen the four retainer screws using the vehicle tire wrench;
— place vehicle jack under the wheel beam and lift the trailer slightly until the wheels are not in touch with the ground;
— unscrew the retainer bolts and remove the wheel;
— install the spare wheel, twist the four retainer bolts and tighten them evenly until snug according to cross pattern;
— lower and remove the jack, tighten the screws at a 70 Nm (7 kg.m) torque;
— check the tire pressure and remove the anti-skid inserts.
Storage conditions and package
Storage conditions – non-heated rooms in microclimatic areas of moderate and cool climates. To save the garage space the trailer may be kept in vertical position while the trailer is securely fixed to prevent accidental falling. Storage time without repeated “conservation”—one year.
Depending upon the situation, the trailer is fully or partially transformable:
- Partial transformation.
Being on the road and in need for a break it is possible to deploy only kitchen: use gas, water, etc. This requires just opening one door and installing a small support without spreading the entire trailer.
- Full transformation.
In case you make a long stay (overnight, rest, picnic) the trailer is capable of full transformation:
Disconnect the trailer from the vehicle and move it to a flat ground, secure the supports, open the back door – and the kitchen is ready for unfolding its upper part (as a book), join the frame elements and lift the tent, secure all the internal and external supports, make interior arrangements: hang the curtains, remove the baggage, unfold the sofa, prepare the bed, place the flooring cover.
General recommendations on servicing and operation.
- Optimizing the load.
The load shall be evenly spread over the frame and shall not exceed the specifications for this individual model (70kg, 100kg). When a heavy-weight object needs to be placed on the trailer and the bulk is concentrated in one zone (e.g. boat motor), the recommended load shall not exceed 30% acceptable weight.
- Tent maintenance.
The tent shall be packed in dry condition. When wet, high density of the canvas requires full drying before deployment (minimum 24 hours). Violation of this rule may lead to generation of fungus and decay of the canvas.
To clean the tent it is required to use dedicated brushes and detergents that do not erode the waterproof layer. The canvas and the seams may be additionally treated with waterproofing solutions as required.
- Maintenance of the basis.
To prevent damage to armor glass fibers it is required of treatment with a special solution free of abrasives. Polishing shall take place at least once per year.
- Wheels maintenance.
Before starting a trip:
- Check the condition of the tires and the tire pressure.
There are standard specifications for the optimum pressure inside the tires considering the total trailer weight and maximum speed. Meeting this requirement gives unlimited service life to the tires.
- check the wheel bearings for reliability of the fixation and absence of unusual sounds;
- observe the tires for wear, ruptures and punctures;
- maintain and clean the brake facing;
- lubricate the connections;
- adjust the brake system (once per year or every 3000 km)
- tighten the wheels, spindles and couplings (every 3000 km)
